Tips for Hiking the Waihee Ridge Trail

Tips for Hiking the Waihee Ridge Trail

The Waihee Ridge Trail is 5-mile round trip with an elevation of 1500 ft.
The incline is aggressive at the start however it eventually evens out before it begins again. The path is clearly defined and marked with warnings where needed and where the next scenic viewpoint is. If you are thinking about hiking this trail on your next trip, I hope these tips for the Waihee Ridge Trail helps you out!

Google Map the trail and it will lead you to the path; you will see the overflow parking first, I recommend continuing driving up until you find the parking at the trailhead.

Tips for Hiking the Waihee Ridge Trail:

Wear the right shoes:

The trail is primarily a dirt path with some stairs, the day was dry when I hiked, so my runners were sufficient although I did slip a few times coming down. Having proper hiking shoes is the best thing to have given the unpredictable weather – the tropical downpour began after we finished! Shoes with good grip are needed if the trail is muddy.

Bring sunscreen:

Sunny days are always great for hiking; the elevation is going to bring you closer to the Sun and sunscreen is always a good idea.

Stay hydrated:

Probably the most critical factor to consider when doing any hike, especially one that is strenuous.

Wear layers:

Depending on the weather and your preference, it was colder at the top, and my shirt soaked with sweat. I wish I had a spare dry shirt to change into or a jacket.

Bring food:

Musubi’s are a type of sushi that is essentially rice, wrapped in seaweed with spam or another meat, this is the perfect snack to bring or any fuel is good to have on this hike. There’s a picnic table at the top to recharge before the trek down.

Lastly, as obvious as the trail is, certain parts you will be walking beside a cliff drop. Always be aware of your step. With that, I believe anyone in good health and physical ability will be able to hike this trail.
