Visiting in August, it was perfect weather! With only several hours to spend at Mt. Rainier National Park, my travel companion and I were suggested to hike the Skyline Trail at the Visitors Centre. The average time to complete it is 4 hours. Even with taking many photos we finished in under 4 hours. With that, I want to share five tips for hiking the Skyline Trail at Mt. Rainier National Park.

5 Tips for Hiking the Skyline Trail

  1. Go Early To Get a Parking Spot
Use Google Maps to direct yourself to the Henry M Jackson Visitor Center – the Skyline trail begins close by at the stone steps inscribed with a quote by John Muir.
The visitor center is open at 10 am. However, I would not arrive later than that to be safe – there is wifi too!
  2. Get the trail map from the Visitors Centre or a Ranger
While the trail is marked, it is super handy to have a trail map! You may find yourself with more energy to explore, and the plan will guide you to your next trail and viewpoint.
  3. Wear proper shoes!
It can be done in runners. I did it in my Adidas Stan Smith’s because I forgot to pack my hiking shoes, rookie mistake. I would still recommend having runners or hiking shoes with good grip. There are some rocky areas with loose rocks that can cause you to slip.
  4. Use the bathroom before starting
There is a bathroom by the visitor center and one other on the trail.
The Skyline trail has constant traffic, instead of waiting for the bathroom on the mountain; I would advise using the one at the visitor center before starting.
  5. Bring water and snacks
    It’s a 5.3 mile/8.2 kilometer hike with an elevation gain of 1,758 feet/535 meters.
Staying hydrated and having something in your stomach will help you finish this hike feeling just a good as you started!
Especially on a sunny day, water is your best friend.

Extra tips!

  • Pack layers
I made sure to bring my sweater because at higher elevation it was windy and cold!
  • Carry the right backpack
Having a backpack with support a the waist will be incredibly helpful carrying your items. Such as water!
  • Turn around and look at the view
Every so often, look back. The sights are spectacular.

Lastly, the trail is well maintained, which is perfect for new hikers and families; there are a lot of families. For the hiker that wants something more off the beaten path, this trail may not be for you. Even so, the views were enough to connect me with nature and all of its splendor.

On a final note, if you still want to see more and have no more energy left after this trail, Reflection Lakes is only a 7-minute drive from the visitors’ center!
